I just got an 1894 barber dime in some change. It has a lot of wear and I can't see if it has a mint mark. What should I do? Are there some with no mint
marks or is there a way to tell for sure? Maybe clean off some of the black to see if I can distinguish a letter? Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum squidwoman!
I'm surprised on two counts. One, that you found such an old dime in circulation, and two, that 1894 dimes, in Good condition (the formal grade, not just an adjective) can go for $29. (Here's the PCGS price guide for Barber Dimes). There are some with no mintmarks. If it has one it would be on the reverse below the wreath. Congrats on a great find! |

I would not clean the coin if I were you. That can significantly damage the value of the coin. Only someone who really knows how to conserve a coin properly should be doing that. Of course, I realize that the value of that coin is not overly great ... an improper cleaning would make if far less desirable to other collectors. Chris |
