I have been collecting for almost two years now. I haven't really decided on what collecting path I should take so I collect all over the place. I really
do love Peace dollars and Jefferson nickels though. It is great to see the site getting some interest these days.

Chris,
Jefferson nickels are a great series because there is generally little interest in them. That means you can get high-grade specimens at low prices. The Peace dollar is another excellent series. It's far easier to assemble a collection of them as compared to Morgans. Franklin Halves are another easy set to start with. You can put together a complete set for $200-300, then slowly upgrade over time. |

I started when I got a bunch of silver from my Great Grandmother that she pulled from circulation and have been on/off again for over ten years. I guess I
would have to say that I have only been taking is "seriously" for two or three years at this point. When my Wife and I had out first child I sold a
few motorcycles and my skydiving gear and started a 7070 album. It has been a real joy ever since!

Morgan Collects Morgans | #4 | ||
|
When I was about 12 or so my father gave me a collection of coins he had from his father. One of them was an 1800 Liberty Dollar! There were also a couple of
Morgans, a large 1837 Penny from Lower Canada and quite a few others he got from one his uncles (Morgan side of the family) who was a Master Chief Machinist in
the Navy (fought in the Spanish American War in the Philippines!). I always kept them in a special place and often took them out to admire and ponder over.
When I got older I made several trips to Europe and saved coins from a lot of different countries: England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium,
Austria, Czechoslovakia, Norway etc. But I didn't really get into it knowledgeably until a few years back when I started buying Morgan Dollars - and then
also selling them on eBay as I improved my Collection. I've learned a lot since then and my enthusiasm keeps growing, as it has for more than 50 years
now. I've just finished setting up a Website about the Symbolism used on Collectible Certificates and I added a page on the Symbols used on some Coins.
This Website will keep growing and if you're interested you can see the page on coins at this address:

I have been collecting since I was a baby. Ok stop laughing!!! :) My father collected before I was thought of and when I was born he started to collect for me.
I was born in 69 but I would have to say since the 70's. I use to spend hours looking at coins with him, at first I thought he was some kind of nut, but
through the years he has taught me a thing or two. I got into error coins not long after that, I would say in late 80's. One thing that is nice still today
we share storys while looking at coins. I now have my daughter doing the same thing and she loves it, she is (6). Now my father is getting up in age and not
able to see as clear, we still do the coin search but one thing after all these years that i just realized how neat it is to be able to have that precious time
together and learn so much about coins. something I hope to pass on to both my daughters. Take care all & ty for all the wonderfull post!!!

Like alot of the posters above I started at a early age. my Father started a collection way before I was born and he gave all of it to me when he passed away
last year.
He bought some of the cheaper coin folders from Harris & Co for me when I was a child and I have been trying to fill them every since. I Mainly collect the coins you get in change but have started looking at some of the more pricer coins. I am trying to buy up one roll of each of the new presidential dollars and am now wishing i had done the same thing with the State Quarters. My knowledge of collecting is very limited but I hope to learn alot more from this and many other sites. |
