1943 steel wheat penny--any value? |
Lead | ||
|
My 11 year old son found a 1943 steel wheat penny in his little brother's piggy bank. He seems to remember from a TV show that it has some value. My seven year old now thinks he's rich. I am trying to find out how collectible it really is. Can anyone help me?

If the coin is in uncirculated condition - which is highly unlikely since it came from a piggy bank - it would be worth perhaps $5. If it was a very high grade of uncirculated such as MS66 it would be worth approximately $50. Unless it was of the D over D mint mark variety - then it would be worth approximately $500 in uncirculated condition. So - sorry to tell you you'll have tell your son he is not rich. But it sure makes for an interesting beginning to a coin collection for him - encourage it ! |

1943 penny worth more than you think | #2
|
All circulating pennies at that time were struck in zinc-coated steel because copper was needed for the Allied war effort.
Really all? NO! About 12 examples are known to have been struck by the Mint, evidently by accident, when copper-alloy 1-cent blanks remained in the press hopper when production began on the new steel pennies. The highest amount paid for a 1943 copper cent was $112,500 on December 22, 1999. Because of its collector value, the 1943 copper cent has been counterfeited by coating steel cents with copper or by altering the dates of 1945, '48 and '49 pennies. |

It means. | #4 | ||

Yes, it does mean something. It is a letter D or P or nothing. That is where it was released. P is for Philadelphia. D is for Denver.And I think nothing or S is for San Francisco.

Hi, I have 5 1943 steel pennies. They're very common and worth around 50 cents each or so. Maybe more if they're in uncirculated or mint condition. It's the first thing I asked when I got interested in collecting coins. I'm still just beginning though. Here's a link to look at:
www.coinpeople.com/forums....php?t=825 and if you want to know which dates are worth a LOT...here's a good educational read... www.coinpeople.com/forums...c.php?t=13 |

Ok, along the same lines, here's a question that I'm not sure was covered. My father-in-law (who just passed in 2002) collected pennies for better than 50 years. Among those many pennies was an actual 1943 STEEL penny. Not the 'wheat'(brown) penny you all seem to be speaking of, but an actual silver steel penny.
Also found within the 33,624 pennies were two steel wheat pennies, and a penny marked as 1/2 cent that I have no idea where it's from, so I know the difference between the two. Of course, all three pennies are magnetic. The 1/2 cent is just weird, and a bit smaller than the regular penny size. So the questions are: 1) Is there a difference in value between the steel wheat penny and an actual steel penny? 2) Does anyone have any idea who used a 1/2 cent? 3) The steel penny, while in excellent shape, is kind of dirty. Should I clean it, or leave it as is? I believe the penny was minted in SF because it doesn't have a P or D marking on it. Thanks for any help you can give me with this. Peace LBD |

I also have (2)silver steel magnetic pennies. One is a little dirty and the other is in mint condition. I'm trying to find out how much they are worth. Shall I keep them or spend them? And no, you can't just have them

I've had a penny for quite a long time now so long I've forgotten where I got it, it's a 1943 and it's steel Because it can be picked up by magnets really well of any size. It is from denver and it's in all right condition. I thought they were worth about ten dollars when i ran into some people that collected coins and they told me that it was worth alot more and i was wondering how you tell the difference? can you help me figure it out?

Difference between pennies | #17
|
Hello, I have 2 wheat pennies minted in 1943. What is the difference between an actual steel(zinc) penny and a highly corroded copper penny?And in reply to the quarter, probably face value, depending on condition and wether or not it was circulated also plays a huge factor.
