I got a 1985 silver penny in some change tonight . . . is it worth anything? It seems really light in weight. I don't know anything about coin collecting, so any info would be nice.

I also recently found some interesting money pieces. Have you found anyone to give you any answers on your penny? If so, Who and can you lead me in their direction?

Zinc not Silver | #3 | ||
|
The chance of the US mint making a penny out of silver is about 1 out of never. This is simply because the mint doesn't produce silver coins, except American Eagle, and I doubt your penny is the size of a silver dollar. I'm not saying that it is 100% impossible, but really close to it, maybe like 99.9999%
The only "logical" reasoning is that your penny is zinc. As of 1982, US pennies have been made from copper plated zinc, zinc being a silver color. If somebody found some sort of liquid to remove the copper, or just scratched it off, you would have a zinc, or silver looking, penny. Go through your change and look for a new penny, 2002-2003, and scratch it with a knife... what do you see? Silver? Nope, you see zinc. The same goes for anybody who ever cut a penny with powerful scisors. Another "silver penny" was made in 1974. According to the US government, several hundred aluminum pennies were made, I think I read it was like 140; anyways, they were passed around D.C. to government people, but were later recalled. Rumor has it that a few copies are still out there, but the aluminum pennies are illegal to own, so if anybody really does have them, nobody would even know. Again, I'm not saying that the penny isn't silver, but I highly doubt that, being a collector for several years. ~DP |

I found a sliver penny also, but it is not light weight at all. it is a lot heavier than a normal penny.it is dated 1971 from the sacramento mint. it looks just like a regular penny as far as the markings go. ive heard about silver pennies made back in WWII but none in the 70's. any thoughts would be appreiciated. thx

There were silver war pennies made during WWII. I don't know the current value. I bought them from a coin show in my home town when i was 16 years old. I bought each penny for $12. I was young and didn't know much but hey I still have them so to me they worth their $12 bucks.

I agree with Beautifulm. I did some reasearch and found that in 1943 they did make steel/zinc pennies. The reason was to free up the copper so that it could be used for war. I don't know about any other years that this was done but if you have one from 1943, i can prove that it is a genuine penny "silver" (steel/zinc) penny.

1943 pennies are not worth a whole heck of a lot.
My 2002 Whitman guide rates them between .03 to 1.00 depending on quality and mint. I suppose the going rate for a proof or certified slab might be higher. Standard average quality you find in change are neat, but still pretty common. |

I have what I believe to be a silver penny. It's dated 1919. Did they do it in zinc back in those days, too? I put it through the "ring" test. I think it passed. Please, do tell if you have any information. A.B.

Re: Silver Penny | #16 | ||

I don't believe that the United States Mint actually made any silver pennies. The Wartime cents of 1943 were of steel, not silver. As several users have suggested, these so-called silver pennies are probably zinc.

Silver Penny | #18 | ||

In college I had a job in a lab that had various plating tanks. For yuks I put flash coatings on various coins - my favorite was making "copper" dimes. These coatings were thin, so no detail was lost, but thick enough for good color coverage. I lost track of them - maybe it's one of mine. But, I'm quite sure plenty of other people have done the same thing!
